The October Birthstone and Fabled Lore

Jewelry

From earliest times, gemstones have been valued for their beauty and rarity. The ancient Babylonians believed that certain gems carried wonderful cosmological powers and attached meanings to them as early as 1400 B.C.  Jewish gem traders in Poland or jewelers in Germany may have created the first birthstone listings. A modern list was created 1912 by the National Association of Jewelers and updated in 1952. In 2002, Tanzanite was added to the December listing.  The wearing of birthstones is thought to bring good luck and good health. Astrologers long ago attributed supernatural powers to certain gemstones.
Opal Dangle Earrings

People born in October are lucky as they have two birthstones as listings. Both the Opal and the Tourmaline match the birth month for October, and both have glorious colors from which to choose. Discovering the fabled benefits and lore of each of the gems is fascinating. In past blogs, I have talked about self-confidence, and the Opal symbolizes confidence, hope and faithfulness. The word Opal comes from the Latin word, opalus, meaning "precious jewel." Jewelry with Opals set in them were worn to repel evil and to protect the wearer from envious mal intentioned people. Some believed the Opal protected the eyesight. Tourmaline gemstone is well known for its incredible ability to aid in the detoxification process of the human body. The word Tourmaline means "stone mixed with vibrant colors." From magenta to teal-blue, there are no two tourmalines with the exact same color. The gem has been reported as helping to ease emotions, increasing vitality and vigor.
